Nothing has been the same since March 2020
The global corona pandemic dominates events on earth. We know the pictures from all over the world, with dead, sick, overcrowded hospitals, shutdown of the global economy but also shutdown of social contacts and much more. Of course, Iceland is also massively affected. Not so much because of high infection rates or many deaths (at the moment Iceland officially counts 10 deaths due to Covid19), but because of the economic dependence on the global economy and especially the dependence on tourism.
Icelandic authorities had already carried out tests in the population weeks before the first corona case in Iceland. Probably nowhere else in the world was such a high percentage of the population tested as on the North Atlantic island. Therefore Iceland was able to inform the Austrian authorities about the infection in Ischgl at an early stage. However, these warnings were initially ignored.
The developments of the last months have also led to massive changes in Iceland. Icelandair is in danger of going bankrupt, the entire tourism sector is suffering and no guests have been coming to the country since March. Also we at Nordiclodges have only received cancellations since March, which we have generously implemented for our guests due to the current situation.
Cautious optimism for a visit to Iceland
The situation is improving in many countries around the world. Especially in Europe, infection rates are declining. There are fewer and fewer infections and deaths. Public life is slowly being allowed to resume and many countries are opening their borders. Of course, precautions such as “social distancing”, hygiene, etc. must still be observed.
These requirements are the reason why many holiday destinations cannot be visited this year. Mass tourism, large hotel complexes and cruises are seen as problematic. All places where many people come together in a small space and distances cannot be kept. It is not for nothing that camping holidays are experiencing an incredible boom this summer, although at a campsite in Europe you are not directly alone either. Holiday homes are particularly in demand this year, because here – unlike in hotels – the distance can be kept easily.
Holiday home in Iceland – the perfect holiday destination
Holiday home and Iceland, this is currently probably the best and safest way to take a holiday. Because in Iceland you can experience the vastness of nature and avoid other people. In our private holiday homes you have a lot of space. Not only in the house, but also in the surroundings of our houses. The privacy of our guests was an important criterion in the selection of the houses. Spread out in the cosy and spacious houses with your family or friends, use the in-house HotPot (Holt, Langholt, Brekka and Hamragil) or simply let the view of the irresistible Icelandic landscape take effect on you.
Travel to Iceland easier
Travel warnings to many European countries will be lifted on 15 June. This includes Iceland. Airlines have also announced that they will resume flights to Iceland, albeit with limited volume.
Previously, travellers to Iceland had to first undergo a two-week quarantine. From June 15th, there will also be the possibility to show a current (negative) corona test, or to be tested for Covid19 on entry to Iceland. It is not yet clear who will bear the costs for this test. Maybe there will be further relaxations like in other countries, but this cannot be estimated at the moment.
We cannot give you a recommendation on whether a trip to Iceland is safe or not. Therefore, please inform yourself from various sources before you decide to visit us.
